MARCHOSIAS, UNITED STATES

FOUNDED 1623
Marchosias, the second and final NetherKind City to rise in the Americas, was established in 1623 on the southern reaches of the West Coast. Built by determined NetherKind travellers from Balam, the city emerged as a sister settlement, embodying shared values of unity, strength, and coexistence while forging its own distinct identity. What began as a vision of expansion transformed into a sanctuary for the weary, the displaced, and those yearning for harmony.
Nestled against rolling hills and sunlit coastlines, Marchosias is a city of breathtaking beauty and quiet resilience. Its architecture, shaped by NetherKind craftsmanship and inspired by its Southern surroundings, reflects a harmony between the built and natural worlds. Cobblestone streets wind through lush gardens and vibrant market squares, where the scent of blooming flora mingles with spices and the hum of conversation. Open courtyards, shaded by ancient trees, offer spaces for reflection and connection, while grand plazas host celebrations that echo with laughter and music. Unlike Balam’s fortified strength, Marchosias exudes a sense of openness and welcome—though its defences, hidden within the hills and cliffs, are as formidable as the city’s resolve.
From its inception, Marchosias was shaped by pivotal moments in American history, its legacy entwined with the struggles and triumphs of its inhabitants. During the Declaration of American Independence in 1776, Marchosias and Balam stood firm in their refusal to be recognised as part of the United States. Great Britain, seeking allies in the colonial conflict, reached out to Marchosias for assistance. However, the city’s leadership—rooted in principles of neutrality and justice—declined any direct involvement, offering instead to mediate discussions. This decision, though honourable, bred mistrust from the fledgling American Colonies, culminating in a formal declaration of war against both Marchosias and Balam in 1777.
The conflict tested Marchosias’s commitment to its ideals. Despite threats and provocations, the city resisted unnecessary violence, its leaders determined to avoid bloodshed wherever possible. Its citizens fortified their defences and worked tirelessly to protect the vulnerable, offering refuge to those displaced by the war. By 1780, diplomacy prevailed, resulting in a peace treaty that marked the beginning of a tenuous yet enduring relationship between the United States and the NetherKind Cities.
Marchosias’s defining moment came during the American Civil War. True to its principles, the city declared itself a sanctuary for enslaved individuals seeking freedom, risking conflict with the Confederacy. Its refusal to align with either side of the war—standing instead as a protector of the oppressed—solidified its reputation as a city of moral conviction. With Balam’s unwavering support, Marchosias withstood threats and reprisals from the Confederacy, ensuring the safety of those who sought refuge within its borders. By the war’s end in 1865, Marchosias’s contributions to the abolitionist cause led to the formal recognition of both Marchosias and Balam as independent nations by the United States, cementing their place in history as bastions of justice and equality.
In the modern era, Marchosias thrives as a beacon of cultural exchange, political influence, and community. Its streets bustle with a diverse mix of NetherKind and human inhabitants, each contributing to the city’s unique identity. Markets overflow with goods from across the Americas, while theatres and galleries celebrate the creative expressions of its people. Marchosias’s commitment to justice remains steadfast, reflected in its policies of inclusion, its role as a sanctuary for the vulnerable, and its dedication to fostering dialogue and understanding between species.
The city’s connection to its sister city, Balam, remains strong, with the two often collaborating on matters of diplomacy, trade, and defence. Yet Marchosias has also carved out its own path, earning a reputation for its adaptability, compassion, and unyielding principles. It stands as a testament to the strength of conviction, proving that even in the face of adversity, a city can thrive without compromising its values.
More than just a city, Marchosias is a symbol of what can be achieved when compassion guides action and unity overcomes division. It is a living reminder of the trials its people have endured, the ideals they continue to uphold, and the possibilities that arise when communities come together in pursuit of a better future. For those who call it home, Marchosias is not simply a place—it is a promise that justice and peace can endure, even in the most tumultuous of times.
