Physiology

Vampires have an unnerving stillness to them, their movements precise and deliberate, never wasted. Their skin is pale, sometimes appearing almost colourless in certain lighting, and their eyes always carry a red hue, which becomes more pronounced in dim environments. Though they share the same physical form as humans, there is a sharpness to their features, an intensity in the way they carry themselves that sets them apart.

Perhaps their most well-known trait is their vulnerability to sunlight. Exposure to direct sunlight results in a rapid and irreversible burning process, reducing them to ash in mere moments. This forces them to seek shelter in locations where natural barriers provide protection or construct hidden sanctuaries deep underground.

Another notable characteristic is their greatly reduced aging process. While it is evident that vampires age far more slowly than humans, the limits of their lifespan remain unknown. Some appear unchanged for centuries, while others eventually show signs of age—though at a vastly different pace from any human. This has led to speculation among scholars and the NetherKind alike as to whether vampires eventually die of old age or if other factors determine their longevity.

However, historical accounts—particularly from the Ash Dawn—paint a far grimmer picture. Facing extermination, vampires were seen tearing through their attackers with overwhelming force, their speed and precision turning battles into massacres. These rare moments of unleashed power only heightened the fear humans held toward them, reinforcing the belief that vampires were an existential threat that needed to be eradicated.

Culture & Society

Vampires do not reproduce naturally, which has shaped their culture into one of careful selection and strict traditions. Outsiders who wish to join their ranks must first integrate into vampire society, living among them for extended periods to fully immerse themselves in their customs. Only then, after long deliberation, will the vampires extend an invitation for transformation—a ceremonial process that involves an exchange of blood and a period of rest in absolute darkness. This process is never forced, and only those who align with their way of life are chosen.

Despite their isolation, vampires have a rich oral tradition, with history preserved through stories, symbols, and carved Memoriam Stones—engraved markers left in hidden settlements to honour their fallen and record their history. Each stone tells a story, encoded through intricate patterns, ensuring that even if their kind is lost, their past will not be forgotten.

Ties to the World

Vampires are unique among the NetherKind in that they did not evolve naturally. Their origins remain a mystery, and while legends differ, many speak of a singular progenitor—Silas. Whether an alchemical accident or a divine punishment, Silas is said to have been the first vampire, wandering alone until encountering others who shared their fate. Some believe Silas still exists somewhere in the world, their legacy surviving through the stories passed down by their kind.

Speculation persists that the first vampire was once human. This theory, fuelled by the fact that only humans can survive the transformation, has led to debates among scholars and conspiracy theorists alike. Some believe Silas was the result of an ancient experiment gone wrong; others suggest something more deliberate. Regardless of the truth, this unique link to humanity heightened the fear that led to the Ash Dawn.

During the height of vampire persecution, humans saw themselves as livestock, believing that, given enough time, all of humanity would either be turned or devoured. The hysteria that followed fueled an unprecedented extermination campaign, forcing the remaining vampires into hiding. While no other NetherKind species were directly targeted, the Ash Dawn served as a chilling reminder of what humans were capable of, causing many species to withdraw from human society altogether.

Despite the centuries of separation, some NetherKind species stepped forward to aid vampires in their time of need. The Julpa provided shelter deep within their forests, while the Nyssari guided fleeing vampires to hidden sanctuaries. This act of solidarity forged lasting bonds between vampires and the other NetherKind—though with an ironic twist. Vampires, despite their deep mistrust of humans, remain entirely reliant on them to sustain their species. The very beings they fear and avoid are the only ones capable of increasing their numbers, a fact that continues to shape their fragile place in the world.

While most vampires remain hidden, some have found a rare sanctuary in places where darkness is prolonged. One such settlement, The Eternal Haven, exists in Svalbard, Norway, where polar nights stretch for months. Here, vampires have built a thriving community, free from the constant threat of sunlight, proving that even in the most inhospitable places, their kind can endure.

Vampires are a contradiction—fragile yet enduring, feared yet misunderstood. Their history is a testament to survival against impossible odds, a reminder of what it means to adapt when the world seeks to erase you. As one of the most persecuted NetherKind species, they have endured through secrecy and resilience, their presence lingering in the spaces between legend and reality. Though their numbers are few, they are the silent observers of a world that has long sought to forget them.
